"My metabolism has slowed down."
I hear some version of that sentence almost daily, and I get why. It's the phrase we all reach for. But if I ask what it actually means, most people pause. And that's fair, because nobody really explains it. We just inherit the phrase.
Metabolism isn't a switch that quietly flips off on your 40th birthday. It's not even mainly about how fast you burn calories sitting on the couch. It's every chemical process your body runs just to keep you upright and functioning: turning food into energy, managing blood sugar, clearing waste, repairing tissue, regulating hormones. All of it.
And somewhere around 40, several of those processes start shifting at once, which is a big part of why this decade can feel like your body swapped the rulebook on you overnight.
Here's what's actually changing
Muscle. Your muscle mass starts declining if you're not doing something deliberate to maintain it, and muscle happens to be one of the biggest drivers of how many calories you burn just existing. Less muscle, slower baseline metabolism.
Hormones. They start shifting too, often years before anyone would call it menopause, and that shift changes how your body stores fat and how hungry you feel.
Blood sugar. Your cells tend to become a little less responsive to insulin than they were at 30, which makes blood sugar harder to keep steady.
Your liver. After years of processed food, the occasional glass of wine, medications, stress, plain living, it can quietly lose some efficiency.
Stress. Through cortisol, it starts having a pull on your weight that it never seemed to have in your twenties.
None of that is happening because you did something wrong. It's happening because your body, at 45 or 50, is genuinely running differently than it did at 25. So the exact plan that worked at 25 often just... stops. Not because you failed at it. Because it wasn't built for the body you have now.
And this is the part that actually frustrates me
It's not that metabolism changes after 40. That part's just biology. What gets me is that the advice doesn't change with it.
Women are still handed the same "eat less, move more" script, no matter what's actually happening in their bodies. And when that script stops working, the conclusion they draw isn't "this approach doesn't fit my biology anymore." It's "something's wrong with me."
After 20 years of doing this, I want to say it plainly: nothing is wrong with you. Your metabolism is playing by a different set of rules now, and somewhere along the way, nobody handed you the new rulebook.
That's the gap this Academy is here to close.
Over the coming weeks we'll go through each of those pieces, liver, blood sugar, hormones, muscle, lifestyle, one at a time, so you know exactly what's driving what you're feeling, instead of guessing at it or blaming yourself for it.
Up next: the seven pillars that actually hold your metabolism together, and why most people are only ever taught about one or two of them, which is exactly why so much advice out there falls flat. I'll walk you through all seven in the next post, so you have the full picture instead of the partial one everyone else is working from.
